A signpost to unknown places

In his book “The Icknield Way” poet and writer Edward Thomas wrote “Today I know there is nothing beyond the farthest of far ridges except a signpost to unknown places” – somehow appropriate to the present situation. In 2013, Gil and I were both members of the committee of the Icknield Way Association and acting route wardens for about 20 miles of the 110 mile Path. That year was the centenary of the publication of Edward Thomas’s book so we organised a weekend of talks and walks as a joint event with the Edward Thomas Fellowship. The meeting to set this up was memorably in the garden of the Fellowship’s regular venue – the Chelsea Arts Club.
