Another reason for collecting seeds

Serpentine is great at saving seeds for sowing in the future, sending to Heritage Seed Library and giving away at Seedy Saturday or to visitors to the site. All good reasons for collecting seeds from our plants. Another reason is to take note of what happens if the ripe seeds are not collected, as illustrated by this image. We were so busy at Serpentine last autumn, that we missed collecting seed from the borage plants in this bit of our garden. As a result we now have rather a lot of seedlings growing where we have other plans for the space. We will let them grow till we are ready to plant in the space and then the plants will make a great addition to our compost heap. This autumn we will be more thorough with our seed collecting!
Yesterday’s uplifting experience was watching a red kite float over our garden and on beyond Hogshaw Wood, just above the tops of the trees and with a trail of pestering jackdaws behind it.
