We have a very exposed and windswept site (the wheelie bins have to be tied down!) and limited indoor growing space. So where we can, we use pots that we can bring in out of the worst of the weather, but put out particularly when pollination is required. Here we have five different heritage tomatoes, a hanging basket with nasturtiums and chilean glory vine and several pots of mirabilis Four o’clock flower.

Things to avoid are tyres as containers (they leach toxic chemicals as they degrade), moss gathered from the wild for hanging basket lining, hydroponic systems (no soil, only chemicals), pots and growing mixes made from peat. In terms of the growing medium, Serpentine is on track – mixing its own, using paper pots, reusing plastic pots and trays. Plants growing in pots like these could be there for six months or more, so I tend to boost our standard potting mix with either extra soil improver/compost or adding a 7cm pot of well rotted manure for each bucket of mix.
