More growing space, more sowing

Over the weekend we converted a 24ftx2ft strip of grass into growing space. Part has now been planted up with our potatoes enabling Gil to replan and allocate more space to Heritage beans, upping each of the dwarf beans from 16 to 20. It is just as well DFB French Horticultural, sown exactly two weeks ago, achieved 100% germination – we sowed 20 to make sure we had 16!
This week’s sowing has also been completed – electric daisies, fennel flower and lettuce Bloody Warrior in quarter trays, Sunflowers in a margarine tub, mangetout Pea Golden Sweet in a full tray and heritage carrot Red Elephant outside. Last week’s mangetout peas are already showing through and all the maincrop varieties have been planted out. We are holding fire for a few days before moving anything else outside as cold nights are forecast, but more things may be possible by the end of the week.
