We are coming to the end of the sowing season and the next couple of weeks are focused on French and Runner beans. Stocks of sowing containers are getting low but we should make it by reusing containers that held grapes. They are transparent so it will be interesting to see if we get good views of roots forming. Monday’s sowing includes a Heritage achocha called “Fat Baby” and four French Beans. One is Cobra which is being grown for the Garden Organic Members’ Experiment – the sowing should be safer from mouse attacks here than at Serpentine. Another is our first ever sowing of “Soldier”. We took this on as it is an “orphan”, that is it didn’t have a Seed Guardian. We hope it will grow well. It’s origins are pre 1800 and its name comes from the fact that the markings around the “hilum” (the part of the seed which attaches it to the pod) resemble a soldier standing to attention.
