Activity Log - 2018

January 2018 – First Serpentine Seed Swap.  200+ seed packages distributed and shared. Site maintenance with regular weekly support from Alderbrook Day Opportunities and helping hands from Derbyshire Wildlife Trust. First monthly Wednesday Workshop.

February 2018 – Sowing for new season;  produce of old season. Composting terrace constructed and filled.

March 2018 – First monthly Cake and Chat session. Delivery of two ton bags of sand, truckload of soil improver from Waterswallows.Large quantities of soil improver and leaf mould sieved for mixing speed and potting compost.First 5 metres of deadwood hedge refreshed.

April 2018 – Early seedlings struggling in cold weather. Fresh sowing.

May 2018 – Potting up. Hole dug for wildlife pond.Filtration bed for composting toilet engaged and improved – to be planted with comfrey. National Children’s Gardening Week activities attracted 50+ small visitors, now returning on a weekly basis.

June 2018 – Buxton Garden Trail Weekend – two hundred and eighty eight visitors. Super comments.

July 2018 –  Formal notice to quit wef 31 July 2018. Preparations for removal – to used shipping container or farmer’s barn for hardware, plants in tubs to be dispersed. Arrangements for collecting seeds after site closure. 19 July – withdrawal of notice to quit. 22 July – Give Peas a Chance – let us celebrate. 25 July – Licence extended to cover period before interim lease is agreed.

August 2018 – 12 /15 August – events gathering ideas for use of the space.

September 2018 – Big increase in numbers of regular volunteers.  Weekly updates circulated to all volunteers and supporters. Green Pavilion Cafe reopened – and talking weekly salad tray. Two candidates for Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award start the work experience/ community involvement element with us.

October 2018 – Apple Day:  90 visitors including 15 children despite driving rain.  Plus 16 volunteers tending the presses, offering refreshments and tours. John and Gil guest speakers at Soroptimists’ meeting and Burbage Gardening Society event.  Madeline guest speaker at Buxton Civic Association event.

November 2018 – Tarmac team building day: new path, fencing and ground clearance. Sixteen volunteers put in a day to clear area between growing space and woodland.  Skip nearly filled; metal put aside for collection; stone, bricks and paving slabs sorted for re-use.

December 2018 –  Winter Gathering: 53 visitors  plus 18 volunteers offering refreshments and tours.
